Contributions:
Although I would like to say that my comedic relief was my only contribution to he class, I will say that my input during discussions helped shape them and spur other classmates to join in as well. To say the least, my enthusiasm uplifted the spirits of the class and perhaps energized us to go forth and accomplish our goals as a class. My contributions also assisted in class socialization (I believe), due to the social 'butterfly' in me. I wan to take all of the credit, but ultimately it was the class as a whole who persevered and I thank each and every one of you who made it a great experience!
The person that I feel I benefited from would be Deven Carlock. His input throughout the discussions provided ample feedback and helped the class as a whole focus on the subject matter throughout the discussions. He is also a well-rounded speaker, able to get through any situation through his communicative skills. Thank you, Deven!
Legacy:
In my portfolio, I have chosen to use the background research as well as a reading journal to show my mastery of different course objectives. These assignments really assisted in more ways than one to hone in on my understanding and use of the objectives. They can be used as a tool for future students to better their understanding of the requirements of this class. Between these two sub-categories of the class, my understanding of objectives one, two, three and five were greatly increased and utilized throughout the course. For example, from the reading journal that I wrote, my understanding of demonstrating the results of close reading and original thinking about the works and themes studied in clear, well-organized writing and articulate discussion came clear throughout my writing, and can be observed in my portfolio.
Comparing two texts from my immigrant’s culture, the poem The Mirabeau Bridge by Guillaume Apollinaire and short story The Wrong House written by Guy de Maupassant touch base by both utilizing Marxist criticism through their verses. In The Wrong House, money was always a factor, depicted by the main characters need for it. From The Mirabeau Bridge, the verse: “Love elapses like the river; Love goes by; Poor life is indolent; and expectation always violent” portrays love using a possibly monetary characteristic in the sense of poorness relates to a love never fulfilled (Apollinare). Using the criticisms, we can see clear indications of the author’s intentions through their writings. Looking at themes that I had selected in week one (resistance, how friendship is dependent on sacrifice, and hybridity), both works of literature provide insights on all three themes; hybridity stands out the most, due to the multiple criticisms each selected literature possesses.
Through our collaborative midterm, we embarked on a journey that provided us with a better sense of teamwork and collaboration. The artifacts in my portfolio can be related to the teamwork aspect of the midterm; looking at the second background research artifact, my compassion towards people was tested throughout the process and a greater understanding of my purpose in the group emerged from it. Along with understanding my purpose, I grew as a member of the community by providing key feedback to other classmates and assisting throughout the project as much as possible to ensure our success. Anything that I know now still would not sway my approach to our goals and aspirations as a team!
This course may seem like a lot to handle from the start, but if you hang in there, you might find enjoyment from what you learn and the different opportunities afforded to you through the course. There are many resources available to you, the main one being other classmates because they are the keys to the class’s success as a team. My most helpful resource was my classmates. Without their help and feedback, my work would not be as tailored to success as it is now. Always remember that life is an experience, and you must approach it with an open mind to get the benefits. Keep strong and good luck future English 223 classes to come!
